Following two apparently cataclysmic events referred to, in passing, as the "corn syrup droughts" and the "bandwidth riots", most citizens have decided what remains of the real world isn’t worth the trouble, and spend most of their lives in the Oasis, an alternate wholly virtual reality in which fantasies run wild. It is based on, but quite freely adapted from, a cult science-fiction novel by Ernest Klein, set in a near-future dystopia in which the entire planet is hooked on escape. In its best, most lucid moments, Ready Player One feels like an urgent PS from Spielberg the eternal big kid, just making sure we’ve got the message of his early work straight. Yet from the new generation of directors who grew up immersed in Spielberg, you’d struggle to pick out his one true heir – a filmmaker who understands that a simple shot of a face upturned in wonder can be the most powerful special effect around. And on the other, there are the mavericks and maneuverers – Denis Villeneuve, Michael Bay, Edgar Wright – who grabbed elements of the master’s style and dashed off with them in their own directions. On the one hand, there are the keepers of the flame, led by brother JJ Abrams, for whom ET The Extra-Terrestrial and Raiders of the Lost Ark are like foundational texts, or holy writ. If Steven Spielberg is the Willy Wonka of cinema, will he ever find his Charlie Bucket? As the 71-year-old filmmaker continues to wade through what has become an absurdly fruitful late period – we last reviewed a new Spielberg project on these pages two months ago – the sheer depth and scale of his influence becomes clearer with every passing blockbuster. And it had a lovely morale as well, and that being that people need to live their lives in the real life and not in an online illusion of a world.Dir: Steven Spielberg Starring: Tye Sheridan, Mark Rylance, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, TJ Miller, Simon Pegg. 12A cert, 140 mins All in all, "Ready Player One" is definitely worth taking the time to sit down and watch.

I will say that the movie is worth watching again, not for the story or the special effects, but for picking out familiar characters used as Oasis avatars in the movie, that would be quite a task. Steven Spielberg, Ben Mendelsohn, George Michael, Simon Pegg, Mark Rylance, Perdita. There was a good flow to the movie and it kept its upbeat pace all the way to the very end, and that made for some entertaining stuff.

It was especially awesome to see Jason Voorhees and Spawn make appearances as avatars in the movie as well. There were so many pop culture characters and obscure characters that only true nerds of movies, gaming, comics, etc. I love the overwhelming amount of familiar characters that there were to be seen throughout the entire movie. This was definitely spectacular, and there were so many details. What really blew me away was the special effects and CGI. Sure, it had a predictable and generic storyline, but it was still entertaining enough for what it was. Well, I got the chance to sit down and watch "Ready Player One", had the time to spare, so why not? I must say that I was surprised with the result of this movie, because it was actually rather entertaining.
